Victory at the UEFA Development Tournament

On Tuesday, May 9, the junior Russian national team (players born in 2001) held its final match at the international tournament for the development of UEFA in Portugal. Our team faced off the host team and won by a score of 1:0. The decisive goal was scored by Spartak player Ivan Repyah short before the final whistle was blown.

Russia – Portugal 1:0 (0:0)

Goal: Repyah, 78

Russia: Eshenko, Suharev (Fedorov, 41), Pelih, Prohin, Gerchikov, Sungatulin (Savinih, 75), Nadolskiy (Petrov, 41), Sevikian, Markitessov (Sudarikov, 52), Ussanov (Shkolik, 61), Mazurin (Repyah, 41).

Leonid Ablizin, acting senior coach of the Russian national team:

As we expected, the match turned out to be very difficult with both teams having mutual chances of success. Until halftime, we were the underdogs for the most part, which did not prevent us from creating three excellent goal-scoring opportunities. It’s too bad that we were unable to capitalize on them. The host team, too, came close to scoring. At halftime, we made several substitutions, took over the initiative, and kept manifesting an intelligent style of soccer. The decisive goal was an excellent strike from 23 meters out landing far post scored by Repyah on the 78th minute. It is worth noting that just as in previous matches, the guys showed character, patience, and brought the game to a victorious result.

I think I will not be mistaken if I say that the tournament in Portugal can be called a rehearsal of the first qualifying round of the European Championship, which for our team will be held in Finland in late September/ early October. Moreover, the level of our rivals is comparable even to that of the elite round of the EURO. The Russian national team faced teams with completely different styles of play in Portugal. The football players gained invaluable experience and, of special significance, clinched the overall victory in the tournament on such a festive day for the country.

Turkey – Sweden 3:2

Final team ranking: RUSSIA – 9 points, Portugal – 6, Turkey – 3, Sweden – 0.

The Russian Football Union congratulates the players, coaches, members of the administrative staff of the junior Russian national team on their victory in the tournament in Portugal!
