FUR President

Former player of the Russian National team Alexey Smertin will efficiently act as the Inspector of the Football Union of Russia on fighting racism. – said the vice prime minister of the Russian Federation, FUR president Vitaly Mutko in his comments to TASS news agency.

Smertin took up the post on 21 February.

"Fighting racism in international football is regarded as one of the priorities which is backed by the documents, conventions and regulations of the International Football Federation. We established a special unit that will deal with this issue within the Competitions Department. We needed the leader who like a commissar could monitor this issue and interact with FIFA. Alexey is a well known person in football, ambassador of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, he speaks foreign languages, he is a good candidature for this post”- said Mutko..

As a player Smertin played for English FC Chelsea, FC Portsmouth, FC Charlton and FC Fulham. In Russia he played for FC Uralan Elista, FC Lokomotiv Moscow and FC Dinamo Moscow. He got 55 caps for the Russian National team during 1998 – 2006. Since September 2013 he has been acting as the adviser to the president of FC Dinamo Moscow. 

In summer 2016 Smertin became an ambassador of 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
