Wolf Zabivaka chosen as 2018 FIFA World Cup official mascot
Wolf became the Official Mascot for the 2018 FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia. The results of public voting in which more than one million people took part, were presented in Russia's Channel 1 show Evening Urgant.
In the vote Wolf named Zabivaka outran Tiger and Cat having gained 52,8 percent of votes.
Wolf was developed by Ekaterina Bocharova, the Tomsk State University student. Cat was created by Sofia Podlesnykh, a student of the Novgorod State University named after Yaroslav Mudriy, Tiger by Valeria Taburenko, a student of the Saint-Petersburg State University of Technology and Design.
The public voting was launched at the FIFA official website on 23 September.
The campaign on choosing the mascot started in April 2015 with the vote on characters that might become the mascot. More than 50 thousand fans cast their votes choosing ten most popular characters. At the second stage students of Russian Art Universities joined the campaign.
On 11 February the three finalists were presented, these were Wolf, Tiger and Cat. Since spring the characters of the students were finalized by professional cartoonists and designers with the assistance of the authors. On 23 September the three contenders to become the mascot were presented at the annual festival Circle of Light in Moscow.
