The landmark football event is coming closer. Next summer on 17 June - 2 July the Russian Federation will host the FIFA Confederations Cup for the first time ever. This prestigious competition staged under the FIFA aegis many people fairly call a dress rehearsal of the FIFA World Cup that will take place in our country in 2018.

Eight teams participate in the FIFA Confederations Cup. The hosts qualify automatically, other seven places  are challenged at the FIFA World Cup and championships of six confederations – Europe (UEFA), Asia (AFC), Africa (CAF), South America (CONMEBOL), North and Central America and Caribbean states  (CONCACAF) as well as Oceania (OFC). Only the winners of these tournaments have a chance to fight for the FIFA Confederations Cup.

At the moment seven out of eight participants of the upcoming competition in Russia are known.  Our national team that will take part in the FIFA Confederations Cup for the first time in their history will host world champions 2014 Germany and the champions of all six confederations – Australia (AFC), Chile (CONMEBOL), Mexico (CONCACAF), Portugal (UEFA) and New Zealand (OFC), with Africa’s representative to be determined in February 2017.

The FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 will be held in four Russian cities with rich cultural and sports heritage - Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Kazan and Sochi. Four stadia that will further host the FIFA World Cup 2018 will welcome the eight teams of the tournament a year earlier. Sixteen matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup will take place at FC Spartak Moscow Arena, Fisht stadium in Soch built for the 2014 Olympics, Kazan Arena, built for the World Universiade-2013 and at the stadium which is under construction in Saint-Petersburg.

The Official Draw of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 will be conducted by FIFA’s Deputy Secretary General for Football, Zvonimir Boban, and Chief Officer for Competitions and Events, Colin Smith; five-time Russian Premier League winner, the UEFA EURO 2008 bronze medalist Sergei Semak and two-time Olympic gold medallist Yelena Isinbaeva will be on hand to help as the assistants.

The draw will see the eight teams divided into two groups of four. Russia as the hosts will be the top seed in Group A. It is planned that our team will play their three group stage matches in Saint-Petersburg (1st round), Moscow (2nd round) and Kazan (3rd round). The top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held in Kazan and Sochi, while the final will take place in Saint Petersburg. The match for the 3rd place will be staged in Moscow. The group stage is planned for 17-25 June, the semi-finals are scheduled for 28-29 June, both final games for the prize places will take place on 2 July.

It shall also be noted that recently the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 official ball called Krasava has been presented to the general public. The pattern on the ball developed by FIFA partner adidas features a striking red design with jagged lines running through it, designed to represent the design of a Russian Ruby and the metaphorical jewel of the game. The structure of the ball incorporates an innovative and widely-praised panel shape which offers premium surface structure, enhanced grip and in-flight visibility.

Russia was the first to try out the new ball during the international friendly against Romania at the Akhmat Arena in Grozny on 15 November.
